I was trying to step into the future with "Heartbreak Hotel", trying something different, integrating drama and sound effects with music. And it worked.

Michael Jackson left lots of unreleased music

16 July 2009 23:01

Michael Jackson recorded enough unreleased music before his death to provide fans with fresh sounds "for years to come," says Tommy Mottola, former CEO and chief of Sony, the company with distribution rights to much of Jackson's music.

The material includes songs never heard by the public and reworkings of his classics, Mottola tells Time. The singer was known for recording far more songs than he could fit on an album, he said.

"Let's say 12 or 13 songs end up on the album; Michael could have possibly recorded 15, 20 or 30 songs," says Mottola. "This would probably go for every album he recorded and probably pre-dating [Sony] to his Motown days."

Interest in Jackson's music remains intense: His recordings fill six of the top 10 slots in this week's Billboard Comprehensive Albums chart.

In addition to the older material, Jackson was working on two albums at the time of his death, Time said. One was a classical album with composer David Michael Frank, who told CNM Jackson "had the tunes pretty much worked out."

"That's five years of material right there," Mottola says. "You can just go on and on and on. It's endless for years to come."

Today, TMZ has obtained a track for an unreleased Michael Jackson song. It's called "A Place with No Name," and sounds similar to the song "A Horse with No Name" released by the band America back in 1971.

According to TMZ, America's manager gave permission to Jackson to record his song despite the similarity.

America's current manager, Jim Morey, who was also Michael's manager in the late 80's and early 90's, told TMZ, "The band was honored that Michael chose to do their song and they hope it becomes available for all Michael's fans to hear."

It is not clear when the King of Pop actually recorded the song.
